He describes the limits of the in-clinic nonstress test, which still relies on technology introduced in the 1950s and on frequent clinic visits late in pregnancy, at a time when maternity care deserts are spreading. He then sets out how newer sensing, such as the fetal ECG and heart sounds, and artificial intelligence could make monitoring more accurate and easier to reach.
