On 30 October 2024, TIME named INVU by Nuvo one of its 200 Best Inventions of 2024. INVU is listed in the Home Health category under the heading “Remote Pregnancy Monitoring”, alongside AstraZeneca’s at-home FluMist nasal vaccine, the Withings BeamO, Dexcom’s Stelo glucose monitor and the Masimo W1 medical watch.
In the entry, TIME’s Chris Stokel-Walker starts from the problem: guidelines call for monitoring once or twice a week in the last eight weeks of a high-risk pregnancy, which many women find hard to manage.
He describes INVU as a wearable band that straps around the abdomen, with 12 sensors that use ECG and acoustic sensing to measure the fetal and maternal heart rates and contraction activity, so that the readings reach the patient’s doctor in real time.
TIME collected nominations from its editors and correspondents around the world and through an online application, paying special attention to growing fields such as health care, AI and green energy. Each contender was then judged on originality, efficacy, ambition and impact.
